Abstract

638,106. Luminescent materials and applications. FAULKNER, A. W. Nov. 5, 1947, No. 29549. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (b)] An electric primary battery consists of a photo-electric cell receiving light from a luminescent screen activated by a radio-active source, which may be mixed with the luminescent material. The cell may be enclosed in an evacuated casing opaque to the radiation of the radio-active material and/or to light. As shown in Fig. 2, a copper base plate 17 has a film 18 of selenium covered by a film 19 of silver contacting with a grid 20 of silver or lead and separated by a thin layer of insulating material 22 from a layer 23 of luminescent material containing radio active material. Various luminescent materials and radioactive compounds are suggested. The radioactive material may be separate from the luminescent screen, Fig. 3 (not shown). The photo-electric cell may be of the wet-type having cathodes of copper coated with cupric oxide and a common anode of lead immersed in a solution of lead nitrate, the luminescent material being contained in sealed glass vessels in the solution, Fig. 4 (not shown).
