522,860. Light-sensitive cells; cathode-ray tubes. CARPMAEL, A. (Telefunken Ges. fur Drahtlose Telegraphie). Jan. 11, 1939, No. 993. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] A radiation-sensitive condenser S has a dielectric comprising a selenide or telluride of zinc, cadmium or mercury, the dielectric constant of which varies with the incident radiation. Corresponding sulphides may be added or used alone in the case of cathode-ray tubes for transmitting television. The spectral sensitivity can be modified by adding copper, silver, yttrium, platinum or other metals. To increase the sensitivity, fluxes such as magnesium fluoride are added. As shown, the condenser forms the picture screen of a cathoderay tube B for transmitting television and consists of a metallic back plate M with a superposed layer of actinically sensitive dielectric, on which is a thin transparent metallic coating. The latter may be omitted, and the cathode or the anode A, which receives secondary electrons, may constitute the second electrode of the condenser. The screen may be scanned by molecular rays.
