Abstract
632,861. Controlling change-speed gearing. M'EWEN, E. G. April 30, 1947, No. 11595. [Class 80 (ii)] Means for facilitating the engagement of doubleacting balked dog clutches 13, 14 in a countershaft change-speed gear comprise separate synchronizing upshift and downshift clutches 23, 24 the driving and driven members of which are permanently geared to the input and output shafts 1, 28 and which provide respectively a gear ratio higher than normal top and lower than normal bottom gear. As shown, applied to a countershaft four-speed and reversing gearing, gears 3, 8 meshing gears 2, 7 on the input shaft and countershaft respectively are clutchable to auxiliary shafts 21, 22, geared to the output shaft, by hydraulically or otherwise operated cone clutches the appropriate one of which is automatically engaged on gear selection and tripped out by the first movement of the selector rail to engage the appropriate dog clutch on synchronization. The cone clutches may be replaced by simple three-element epicyclic gears having a driving sun, driven carrier and a reaction annulus stationed by an external brake band to bring in the synchronizing drive. The synchronizing drives may themselves be used as auxiliary high and low gears.
