Abstract

644,131. Preventing lateral canting. LEYLANDS MOTORS, Ltd., and TATTERSALL, N. July 14, 1947, No. 18666. [Class 108(ii)] In a stabilizer for a road vehicle, a shaft set lengthwise of the vehicle either parallel, or at a small angle to its fore-and-aft centre line, has one end splined to a part which can rock about the axis of a vehicle axle or a parallel axis, and the other end splined to a part which can rock relatively to the chassis about a transverse axis, neither part permitting the shaft to rock freely about its own axis relatively to the axle and chassis respectively, so that tilting of the axle relatively to the chassis is resisted by torsion of the shaft and the shaft is stiff enough to restrain rolling of the vehicle chassis consequent upon such tilting. In the arrangement shown, a torsion shaft 13 is rigidly secured at its ends in aligned sockets 12, 12 of transversely disposed torque arms 11, 11, each of which is supported in aligned rubber bushes at the lower ends of pairs of depending links strapped to a back axle casing 2 and a vehicle chassis cross-member 3 respectively. The socket 12 of each torque arm 11 may be disposed centrally of the ends 10 of the arm or towards one end, as shown. If the proximity of the axle casing 2 and cross-member 3 does not allow of a sufficiently long shaft 13. the length of the latter may be effectively increased by employing a shaft having two telescopic parts, one end of each of which is secured to the respective torque arms, the other ends being welded or splined together.
