Abstract
842,551. Steering vehicles. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS INDUSTRIELLES COMMERCIALES ET IMMOBILIERS INTER-TECHNIQUE. April 15, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 12190/57. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] A steering device comprises a rack and pinion mechanism 85, 87 in a housing 86 to which links 81 are attached by adjacent resilient joints 84. The rack is guided and any wear taken up by a guide 93 urged against the rack 85 by a spring 94. The links 81 are pivoted to arms 71 welded to the upper ends of tubes 12 of telescopic devices A. The stub axles of the steerable wheels R are rigid with the lower ends of the tubes 12 so that steering is effected by turning the tubes 12 about their axis XX. Each arm 71 has a split collar 72, Fig. 8, with a conical bore 73 which is eccentric to the bore in the arm. A spigot 74 of a ball 75 enclosed by a socket 77 attached to an arm 81 is held in the bore 73 by a nut 76. Turning of the spigot 74 in the bore 73 provides the adjustment for the relative position of the steering wheel 104 and the wheels R. The arrangement allows the steering mechanism to be placed above the clutch housing 6 at the rear of the motor M and reduces the length of the steering column 105.
