Abstract
631,042. Sliding-clasp fasteners. CONMAR PRODUCTS CORPORATION. July 21, 1947, No. 19469. Convention date, April 2, 1943. [Class 44] A slider for a sliding-clasp fastener carries a twoarmed locking lever, one arm of which is adapted to be engaged by the fastener elements in such a manner that the other arm of the lever, which carries a locking tooth, is urged into engagement with the elements. In the form of Fig. 1, the lever L is fulcrummed at F on a lug 38 on the slider and has a nose part 34 in contact with the elements. As the slider tends to slip down the row of elements, the frictional force of the elements on the nose 34 turns the lever so that the tooth 32 enters into locking engagement with the elements. A pull tab 44, secured in a slot 40 in the lever, is adapted to release the tooth 32 when pulled to draw the slider down. The elements are deflected by the nose 34 into a depression 46 formed in the back wall of the slider to increase the pressure on the nose 34. In a modification, the depression is omitted but sufficient clearance is allowed between the slider and the elements to provide for some deflection under the nose 34. In assembling the slider the lever is installed in the opening in the front wall of the slider and retained in position only by the fastener elements. In another form, the lug 38 on the front wall of the slider is extended to form a complete loop embracing and providing a fulcrum for the lever the nose 34 of which is broad enough to contact both rows of elements. In the form of Figs. 7 and 8, the lever L has fulcrum portions 78 formed at the base of a wing- shaped contact nose on which the direct pressure of the elements is effective to tilt the locking tooth 32 into engagement with the elements. The portions 78 bear in recesses 76 in the front plate of the slider. An embracing loop 56 is provided. The lever is retained by swaged ears 68. The two plates of the slider are pressed and spot-welded together at 26. In a modification for a die-cast slider in which a non-round rivet is formed on one part and received in a non-round hole in the other, the lever is mounted in a manner similar to that shown in Figs. 7 and 8 but without the loop part 56.
