Abstract
Free-flowing shell moulding sand consists of discrete sand particles coated with a thermosetting resin and a mineral lubricating oil. Resins may be phenolic resins, which may be, either resols obtained by condensing phenol and a molar excess of aldehyde, or novolaks obtained with a molar deficiency of aldehyde under acidic conditions and settable by addition of aldehyde, e.g. as hexamine, 2-5% resin is used. Oils may have S.A.E. 10-100 and may be used in amount 0.01-0.1%. A solution of a resol may be added to sand and the solvent evaporated, or, alternatively, hot sand may be mixed with a novolak, and hexamine added in solution, or dry sand may be mixed with a solution of novolak and hexamine. The oil may be added at any stage, preferably to hexamine, which is added to a mixture of sand and novolak. Specification 763,812 is referred to.
