Abstract

626,943. Stoppers. CARTNER, J., and STUCHBERY, A. L. April 4, 1946, No. 10502. [Class 125(iii)] Containers, such as jam jars, which are closured under conditions which produce a vacuum in the head space, and which have a " neck ring " finish, i.e. an annular swelling near the mouth which tapers away to the mouth and to the wall below the swelling, are closured by compressing a gasket 18 around the portion of greater diameter by enforcing a state of tension on the flange 15 of a closure cap 14 whereby the flange is bowed outwardly about the swelling. The cap 14 may be made of metal and may have a flat top or the top may be provided with an annular groove, Fig. 3, (not shown), the portion inside which is allowed freedom of inward movement as a diaphragm, or it may have an annular rib, Fig. 5, (not shown), and an axial pin hole over which a peelable patch of rubber latex or other solidifiable sealing compound may be formed. The lower edge of the flange 15 is inturned at 16a to form a shoulder 17 on which the gasket 18 rests, the edge of the flange being then turned outwardly and inwardly as at 19.
