Abstract

626,256. Fluid friction brakes. GILBERT, GILKES, & GORDON, Ltd., and WILSON, P. N. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22909. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A hydraulic turbine is controlled by a governor 12 connected to a valve 11 in the main supply pipe 10 to the turbine 1 and a valve 7 in a byepass pipe 9 leading from a position in the supply pipe in advance of the main control valve 11 to a hydraulic brake 5 connected to the turbine shaft; the arrangement being such that the governor closes the main control valve 11 and opens the byepass valve 7 simultaneously. After this governing action, the valve 7 is returned to the closed position by a spring 8 and the rate of closing is controlled by a dashpot 14 in the linkage 13. The brake is a Pelton wheel 4 arranged to rotate in a direction opposite to the normal.
