Abstract

619,605. Rack and pinion gearing. MACBETH, C., and ASTON, H. Dec. 16, 1946, No. 36984. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] Rack and pinion steering gear comprises a tubular housing 10 in which the tubular rack 2 is slidable, and a member 9 carrying the pinion 8 on the steering spindle 6, spring pressed at 11 to urge the pinion into close contact with the rack. A stop 12 prevents accidental disengagement of the teeth. The rack is connected to the steerable road wheels by spring mounted ball joints. The rack is hollow for lubrication purposes.
