[Class 120 (ii)] A yarn-winding machine has a stationary member which engages the yarn as it passes to the winding spindle and restricts its traverse so that a package of less length than the full traverse is wound ; the yarn may be traversed and wound by a roll of the kind described in Specification 339,679, [Class 120 (ii)], by other rolls.having interrupted grooves or projecting ribs which direct the yarn in its helical path, the yarn package may be driven by a roll separate from the traverse roll, or the yarn may be traversed by a split drum or by a reciprocating guide and two or more stationary members may be arranged to engage two or more yarns so that two or more packages of less length than the full traverse of the roll is wound on the one spindle. As shown in Fig. 2, stationary member 30 is adjustably mounted on a rod 31 extending along the machine parallel to the axis of the traverse roll 11 and is positioned substantially opposite one of the crossing points x of the grooves 12, 13 of the roll ; the yarn when it contacts with the member 30 is guided from one groove to the other to reverse the traverse of the yarn and a package P is wound of less length than the full traverse of the roll 11. As shown in Fig. 4, a number of members 30 are mounted on the rod 31 opposite crossing points x<2> . . . x<5> of the grooves in the roll 11 and three yarns y<1>, y<2>, y<3> are led to the roll and caused by the members 30 to be traversed along part of the length of the roll and be wound into packages P<1>, P<2> and P<3>.
