613,676. Bed - reciprocating apparatus. FURNIVAL & CO., Ltd., FURNIVAL, F. S., and DAVIS. R. June 26, 1946, No. 19050. [Class 100(ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A mechanism for driving the reciprocating bed of a printing machine in which the bed has a period of constant speed for the greater part of its travel, comprises a rack on the underside of the bed which is engaged alternately by two gear wheels mounted on separate shafts one behind the other, each wheel being formed with teeth for half its width for substantially half its periphery, and the whole of its width for the remainder of its periphery. Two gear wheels 4 and 5 are mounted on shafts 6 and 7 and are driven in opposite directions by inter-meshing gearing. The wheels 4 and 5 are capable of being moved axially on shafts 6 and 7 to engage a rack 3 on the bed 1 by means of a pivoted lever 10 and a cam 15. When the bed 1 comes to the end of its travel at constant speed it is retarded, reversed and accelerated by a reversing mechanism actuated in known manner by a crank 17 during which period the non- toothed portion of the previously operating gear wheel 4 or 5 is opposed to the rack teeth.
