[Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] In a suction cleaner comprising a suction creating means, e.g. a fan 24, Fig. 1, at one end and a filter 41 at the other end bearing a removable cap 6, dust is removed from the filter 41 by removing the cap 6, mounting the cleaner with its open end engaging a supporting surface and shaking the filter by means including an operating member located outside the casing, e.g. a pedal 81 (not shown). The filter shaking mechanism comprises a spring-pressed parallel linkage 46, 47 normally holding the closed end of the filter bag taut by brackets 48. A tension rod 67 connected at one end to one of the links 47 and at its other end to a slide 64, Fig. 3, is mounted on a guideplate 61 formed on a plate 57 fixed to the casing interior. On pivotal movement by the pedal 81 of an operating lever 71 a spring-loaded pawl 76 mounted thereon firstly engages rollers 66 on the slide 64 to move it longitudinally and so move the links 46, 47 against a spring 56, and secondly moves out of engagement with the rollers 66 so that the slide 64, rod 67 and links 46, 47 are suddenly released to tauten the bag 41 with a snap-action. In a modification the upper ends of the link 46 are rigid with a spring-loaded shaft rocked so as to be released with a snap-action on the return of a spring- loaded square-sectionedsliding rod. This return is made after the disengagement of a spring-pressed pawl from a roller mounted on an arm rigid with the shaft. The cleaner also includes a secondary filter 37, and an air outlet 3 to which a pressure dusting tool may be connected.
