Abstract
612,133. Expansion joints for pipes. BROWN, T. W. F., YATES, H. G., and PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING - TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. May 7,1946, No. 13778. [Class 99 (i)] Means for coupling piping to the barrel of an elastic fluid turbine so as to allow for expansion of the latter at high operating temperatures comprise a pair of diametrically-disposed tubular elements each yieldably supported at its two ends by the barrel and a part rigid with the piping respectively. Fig. 2 shows two inlet pipes o connected to two flanged rings e disposed diametrically opposite each other and attached to transverse yokes k which are connected by tie-rods external to the turbine. Between the rings e and the inlet ducts b of the turbine barrel m are provided yieldable sleeves a each carrying at its ends split sealing rings h which engage cylindrical internal surfaces c and d on the ducts b and rings c respectively. External flanges or ribs on the sleeves may be substituted for the rings h. The arrangement allows the barrel to expand axially and radially without restraint from the inlet pipes. Expansion without restraint from the outlet pipe, which would be connected to the ring n, is allowed by providing a thin external casing i attached to the rings e and barrel m.
