722,241. Expansion joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1953. [Nov. 7, 1952] No. 28110/52. Class 99 (1). An expansion piece of the bellows type, e.g. comprising a series of annular plates 1 connected by spacing rings 2, 3 placed alternately at the rims and bores of adjacent plates, connects the open ends of two pipes conveying fluid under pressure, relative axial and angular displacements of the pipes being accommodated by distortion of the bellows. and relative lateral movements of the pipes being accommodated by a sliding motion of one end of the bellows over the adjacent face of the flange 6 of one of the pipes 7. Fluid-sealing contact between the sliding faces is maintained by the resilience of the bellows or the pressure of the fluid acting on the inner surfaces of the bellows, or both. A ring 5 of abrasion resistant material may be interposed between and secured to one of the sliding faces. The maximum internal diameter of the bellows may be larger than the minimum diameter thereof, or the bores of the adjacent pipes, and the overall length of the bellows may be greater than the axial length into which the bellows is fitted to produce an initial sealing pressure between the sliding faces. There may be an end plate 1<SP>1</SP>, smaller in diameter than the plates 1, welded to a flange 4 which is bolted to the adjacent pipe flange, and an end plate 1<SP>11</SP> having an inner diameter larger than the plates 1 so that the flow of fluid is uninterrupted when the bores of the plate and the adjacent pipe are displaced.
