Abstract

[Class 28(i)] [Also in Groups I and XVIII] The cooking of starch - containing food is effected by means of an apparatus comprising a support carrying at least one pressure chamber in a cycle of movement, means for supplying the uncooked food through an opening in the chamber, at one point in the cycle, and for then applying a closure to the opening, means for circulating steam through the chamber during movement of the support, and means for shutting off the steam prior to the end of the cycle of movement and for releasing the closure thereafter. A turret 10 (Fig. 3) which is intermittently rotatable supports eight pressure chambers 12. A charge of raw food is supplied to each chamber in turn at the a position from the loading device D through the spout E. During movement of the charged chamber between the a and b position, a closure 40 at the mouth of the chamber drops thereover and oscillation of a fork 61 strikes a pin 55 and so turns a cam ring 52 to clamp the closure tightly over the mouth of the chamber. At position c steam under pressure from a chamber I in the turret (Fig. 5) is admitted to the chamber 12 by way of a pipe 82 upon the opening of a valve 78 on the pipe 82 by the agency of a cam 85, and by the opening of a valve 103 on an outlet pipe 98. of the chamber 12, the steam is led from the chamber into a chamber O in the turret. The valves 78 and 103 are maintained open in positions d, e and f of the turret. At the position g the valve 103 is closed by the cam 105, the steam inlet valve 78 remaining open. Between the positions g and h steam pressure in the chamber 12 thus increases. At position h the inlet valve 78 is closed by the cam 85, and immediately thereafter a sliding trip arm 62 strikes a pin 55 to unclamp the closure 40 and allow the contents of the chamber 12 to discharge therefrom into a bin B.
