Abstract
602,812. Releasing bombs from aircraft. LELAND, G. H. July 18, 1945, No. 18379. Convention date, June 26, 1944. [Class 9 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] In an electromagnetic device there are two opposing members one secured to the electromagnet and the other to the armature with intervening members co-operating with both in such manner that movement of the members towards one another imparts rotary movement to the member secured to the armature. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a ball 34 is placed in each of 3 arcuate channels formed by grooves in the plate 29 secured to the armature 24 and grooves in the fixed core member 26, the depth of the grooves varying along their length as in Fig. 5 (not shown) whereby the movement of plate 29 towards member 26 due to the linear full on armature 24 causes rotary movement of the plate 29. When used as a bomb release, a projection 41 on plate 29 first engages a lever 39 controlling the release and subsequently actuates lever 40 controlling the arming of the bomb, but if it is desired to release a bomb unarmed, an auxiliary electromagnet is excited to arrest the forward motion of plate 29 before the lever 40 is reached. A similar main electromagnet may be given a current impulse each time a bomb is released whereby the armature moves a contact arm 67, Fig. 14, over fixed contacts 64 connected in the circuit of appropriate signal lamps, the movement of the armature being transmitted through a coupling 72, Fig. 11 (not shown) which gives the arm a progressive step by step movement.
