Abstract

600,973. Printing-presses. HUEBNER, W. C. Oct. 8,1945, No. 26143. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1944. [Class 100(ii)] Printing-cylinders are mounted in printing-machines so as to be readily inserted and replaced with means for ensuring correct registration of the impressions, the supporting means for the cylinders including one support which is axially movable so as to be free of the cylinder and then transversely movable in such manner that a free space is provided for axial removal of the cylinder from a fixed driving-support. The invention is described in connection with a machine in which the inked design is transferred from a thin cylinder 8 fitted with an annular end piece 9 which bears on a fixed tube 10 in which is arranged electrical means for producing lines of force which cause the transfer of ink in known manner to the material which passes between the cylinder 8 and a feed cylinder 4 which does not press the material against the cylinder 8. The cylinder 8 is preferably formed with a design photographically, but it may be fitted with arcuate printing-surfaces. The cylinder 8 is formed with a notch 14 for engaging a driving projection 13 on a driven holder 11 mounted on roller bearings 11<x> so that impressions are accurately registered when a cylinder is returned to operative position. The right-hand end of the cylinder 9 is engaged by a holder 12 rotatable on a double thrust bearing 15 on a journal 15 movable by screw means in a bearing block 17 which can be raised in a slot 18 in the machine frame after the holder 12 is moved axially clear of the cylinder 8. The vertical movement of the bearing block 17 can be effected by latching it to the frame of an inking- apparatus which inks the cylinder 8. This frame 25 is raised and lowered by rotating screws 35, Fig. 5, engaging nuts 34 attached to rails 32 upon which rest wheels 33 attached to the frame 25. The frame 25 carries all inking rolls and ducts &c. required, and when raised it can be moved on to other rails for tranfer to a cleaning device, and a new set of inking rollers &c. can be mounted in the machine while cleaning of a used set is effected. To remove a cylinder 8 from the machine a saddle member 52 is movable on tubular rails supported in the machine frame parallel to the axis of the cylinder, and provided with pivoted members for engaging slots in the inner ends of the cylinder. The withdrawal can be effected without damage to the design. The invention can be applied to a multi-colour machine as shown in Fig. 11 in which a conveyer'band 80 feeds a sheet successively through two couples 3a, 4a similar to the couples 3, 4. As shown one inking-carriage 25a is shown in the raised position for permitting removal of the printing-cylinder, and one couple is shown in active position. In the form shown the bearings for both cylinders 3a, 4a, are movable transversely to permit of removal of the cylinders. One bearing is movable upwards by means of a rack- and-pinion device, and the other downwards in a similar manner. The inking-carriages 25a can be transferred to rails 45a for transport to a washing-apparatus.
