In order to readily change the printing cylinders of a rotary photogravure printing machine comprising several printing units, each of which prints in one colour and comprises an impression cylinder 2, Fig. 1, a printing cylinder 5, an inking system 6 ... 8 and a doctor bar and blade 17, 18, the printing cylinder, inking system and doctor bar and blade of each unit are removable from the unit housing on a wheeled carriage 10. Whilst each unit is printed on a paper web 4 the cylinder 5 is supported in bearings by the housing frame members 1 through stub axles 22 releasably mounted through flanges on the cylinder. The inking system, comprising a trough 6 and a transfer roller 8 and supported on rails 9 by the carriage 10 may be moved vertically through actuation of a hand wheel operated worm gear and sector mechanism 12, 13, 14, 16. When the carriage is in position in the unit the bar 17 and blade 18 are coupled to an arm 19 through which force is applied to the doctor blade 18 by adjustment of a screw 20. The reversal of the direction of travel of the paper through a particular unit necessary in certain printing work is accommodated merely by inserting the carriage 10 into the unit in the reverse direction, reverse coupling for the doctor bar and blade being provided in the unit. In a further unit having a pressure roll 31, Fig. 3, and a small impression cylinder 30, the bearings of the cylinder 5 are accommodated in upwardly inclined slots 34 in the unit frame members 35 whilst the doctor blade and bar 41, 45 are adjusted through a hand wheel actuated mechanism 42 ... 44. The inking system is circulating, a pump 40 and reservoir 39 being provided for this purpose. In a unit for printing sheets 51, Fig. 6, a carriage 53 supports a printing cylinder 52, a wheel operated doctor blade and bar 60 and an inking system comprising a tray 54 supported on parallel motion link 55 ... 57 controlled by a worm and sector arrangement 58 and a hand wheel 59.
