[Class 59] A hammer mill comprises a circular housing 12, 19, a shaft 31 rotatably mounted in the side walls 10, 11 and carrying a grinding rotor 43 operating within a removable screen 39 and a fixed partition 36, a feed outlet 56 in the housing wall, a feed inlet 60 in the side wall 10, extending upwardly from the screen 39 to the shaft bearing, a chamber 61 surrounding this inlet and having an inlet trough 67 on one side and having crusher arms 91 operating therein mounted on an extension of the shaft 31 and co-operating with fixed crusher blades to break and crush roughage material fed to the mill. The crush bars 91 are arranged to raise the incoming roughage and force it against the top of the crusher blades extending inwardly and downwardly from the side of the chamber. Fan blades 47 mounted on fan arms 46 operate between the screen 39 and the housing extracting the ground feed from within the screen and discharging it through the outlet 56. The feed trough 67 is provided with a regulating gate valve and a closure 82 is provided in the chamber with a hand-controlled air inlet 84.
