[Class 9 (i)] A projectile has a core which is rested in front directly against the inside surface of the pointed part of an external casing, and behind is rested against a body inserted in the casing, the core lying freely in the casing between these end supports over the major part of the core. In one construction, Fig. 1, the core 2 of hard metal is mounted in a casing 1, and is supported therein along a circumference 3 and at its rear by a constriction 4 in the casing, which constriction may also be utilized for fixing the projectile in the cartridge case. The base of the core bears against the forward face of a shoe 5 of light material, such as aluminium. In a modification, the front face of the shoe is recessed to receive the base of the core, the front of which has a conical part engaging with a similar surface in the casing. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shoe 5 has recesses, one of which receives the conical base of the core while the other receives a turnedover rear end of the casing. The front face of the shoe may, alternatively, have a projection extending into a recess in the core. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the shoe is hollow and may contain a tracer charge, the core in this case having a front conical surface and a rear conical surface for centring purposes.
