Abstract
590,977. Crank shafts. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. April 27, 1945, No. 10692. Convention date, June 8, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] In a crank shaft having an internal lubricating duct leading from a bearing journal 1 to the surface of the adjacent crank pin 2, the duct comprises a straight inlet passage 6 leading from the journal surface into the adjacent crank web, a sediment trapping chamber 7 extending through the crankpin and the opposite web, and an outlet duct or ducts 9, 10 leading from the inner surface of the chamber to the crank pin surface. As shown, the chamber 7 is open at its outer end to receive a removable sediment cartridge 14 formed as an open ended tube fitting loosely inside the chamber and positively located therein by a dowel pin 16 so that openings 9a, 10a in the cartridge register with the ducts 9, 10. The cartridge is retained by a screw plug 8 and may be threaded or internally flanged at its outer end to facilitate removal. The chamber 7 is preferably of larger cross-section and less inclination to the crank shaft axis than the passage 6.
