Abstract

1,210,865. Cooling lubricant. E. HEGGLIN. Feb.14, 1967 [Feb.14, 1967], No.7167/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] An oil-cooling system for internal combustion engines has a heat-exchanger 1, Fig. 1, which is located in an oil-circuit comprising an oil reservoir 3 and an oil-pump 7, the heat-exchanger having at least one circulation chamber and being connected to the suction side of the oil-pump. In use oil is pumped from the reservoir 3 to an engine 2 by means of the pump 7; the oil passing through a pipe 4, which connects the reservoir 3 to the heat-exchanger 1; the heat-exchanger 1; pipes 5 and 6; and a pipe which connects the pump 7 to the engine 2. Oil is returned from the latter to reservoir 3 via a pipe 8. The heat-exchanger may consist of a spiral-coiled pipe 11, Figs.2 and 3 which is made of heat-conducting material. The pipe 11 has an inlet end 12 which enters a chamber 13 and has an outlet end 15 which terminates in the reservoir 3. The chamber 13 is attached by screws to the reservoir 3 and is provided with a screw 18 having a magnetic portion which attracts impurities thereto. The pipe 6 connects the pump 7, Fig.1 to the pipe 5, an annular gap 16, Fig. 3, being provided so that oil may be pumped direct from the reservoir 3 prior to the oil becoming heated; holes 17, Figs. 2 and 3, being also provided for the same purpose. An alternative heat-exchanger comprises a series of parallel cooling-pipes 19, Fig. 4 which are connected at their ends by pipes 20 and 21 respectively. The pipe 20 is divided by means of a wall 22 into a distributer-section 23 and a collecting-section 24. A feed-pipe 25 connects the section 23 to a chamber 27 and a pipe 26 connects the section 24 to a chamber 28. The chambers 27, 28 are in a casing 29, Figs.6 and 7, and are separated by a wall 30 having bores 31 therein which connect the chambers 27 and 28 together, the bores 31 allowing a by-pass of the heat-exchanger so that oil can be pumped direct from the reservoir 3. The casing 29 is provided with a flange 33 to facilitate attachment to the reservoir 3, the flange having holes 34 therein and a lid 32 being provided. Oil enters the chamber 28 through an opening 14, Fig. 3, in the reservoir 3 and oil is taken from the chamber 27 through an outlet 35 which connects to the pipe 6, Fig. 1.
