Abstract

588,559. Beam compasses. WORNELL, C. N. M. June 30, 1944, No. 12499. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XIX] A calibrated rule 3 is provided with a base member 1 secured thereto, a sliding head 10 with a co-operating scale 71 and a scribing point 14, a trammel element 18 secured to the sliding head and two auxiliary sliding elements 30, 31 which may be finely adjusted and locked to the rule, a second trammel element 33 being secured to one of the auxiliary members. The fineadjustment of the auxiliary members is effected by a screwed rod 19 permanently secured in the member 30 and provided with a nut 39 engaging a slot in the member 31. A screw 20 is provided for clamping the screwed rod to the sliding head. The head is provided with calliper jaws 61, to one of which the scriber 14 is attached by a clamp 15, and a lug 17 to which the trammel element 18 is removably secured. The auxiliary member 30 is provided with a vernier scale 77 and a lug 32 to which the second trammel element 33 is removably secured. In a modification, the base is provided with calliper jaws. The back of the rule may be grooved and used in conjunction with a protractor head, a square and 45 degree head and a centre head. A rod 6 of small cross-section arranged parallel with the rule is provided for use as a depth gauge for small holes as described in Specification 588,560, [Group XIX].
