Abstract

585,590. Snap-action switches; thermal switches; press-button switches. THERMEGA, Ltd., and SINGLETON, S. A. May 3, 1944, No. 8351. [Class 38 (v)] A snap-action switch comprises a blade spring 5 fixed at one end in an insulating block 4 and carrying at the other end a movable contact 6 co-operating with a fixed contact 2 on a rigid strip 1, which also carries a tension or adjustment screw 7 pressing on the blade 5 through an insulating plate 8. A transversely-curved strip 10, fixed at 9 to the blade spring, is pressed by an adjusting screw 11 which in Fig. 1 is mounted on a bimetallic strip 3 and insulated from the strip 10 by a button 12, against the dimple 13 of the blade spring thus bending it to bring the contacts together. A rise in temperature causes the bimetallic strip to move inwards, thus increasing the curvature of blade 5 until at a preset temperature the spring 10 suddenly collapses about the fulcrum 13 and allows the spring blade 5 to straighten, thus opening the contacts. On cooling, a snap closure is obtained when the strip 10 suddenly straightens, a hook 16 restraining its subsequent opening motion at very low temperatures. The tension and adjusting screws may be interchanged, and greater sensitivity may be obtained by replacing the rigid strip 1 by another bimetallic strip. The block 4 may carry spring lugs 24 to locate the thermostat inside a glass vessel. In a further modification. Fig. 6 (not shown), the bimetallic strip is replaced by a leaf spring or rigid holder carrying a slidable insulating push button. Alternatively the push button and tension screw 7 may be interchanged to produce a switch requiring a heavy pressure but small movement to operate it.
