Abstract

423,660. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Getchell, B. E.; Plainville, Connecticut, U.S.A.) June 1, 1933, No. 15866. Convention date, June 6, 1932. [Class 38 (v)] A thermal switch comprises a bimetallic strip 7 fixed at one end to a plate 8. The free end carries a contact 9 which is free to move between stops 10, 11, one or both of which may also be contacts. The middle of the strip is slotted and between the ends of the slot is mounted a helical tension spring 12. Thus in the position shown, the spring assists the strip in making contact with contact 10. When the strip is heated it bends until it has passed the position in which it is straight, when the spring 12 causes it to snap rapidly on to contact 11. The plate 8 is adjustable by means of screws 16, 17 to vary the temperature at which the switch operates.
