Abstract

733,492. Thermal switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and HUMPHREY, R. July 24, 1953 [July 24, 1952], No. 18785/52. Class 38 (5). A trifurcated blade carrying a contact 30 is movable between a fixed contact 36 and a stop 37 with a snap-action. The centre arm 26 of the blade is riveted to a bracket 31 in the switch casing having a U-shaped part 32 against the outer arm of which the outer arms 27 of the blade pivot. The arms of part 32 may be separated by an adjusting screw 35 to increase the tension in blade arm 26 and the compression in arms 27. The latter arms are thicker than arm 26 in the ratio 4: 1. The switch is actuated in response to temperature changes by a fluidfilled capsule 4 closed by a flexible diaphragm 6. A tongue 21 on a lever 20 bears on the diaphragm and movement thereof is transmitted through an ambient-temperature-compensating, bimetal strip 22 and a glass rod 23 to the arm 26 of the switch blade. Upward movement of rod 23 snaps the blade over to open the contacts and on reduction of the force applied to the rod, the blade returns. The position of the pivot 19 of lever 20 and hence the temperature at which the switch operates is adjusted by a cam 9 rotated by a shaft 8 to raise or lower a bracket 14 carrying the pivot.
