Abstract

584,919. Grinding &c. spherical surfaces. HEPWORTH, R. Nov. 24, 1943, No. 19670. [Class 60] In the grinding of spherical surfaces of lenses, the lens or the lap is guided by spherical guide surfaces, distinct from the curved surfaces being formed, with a centre coincident with that of the surface being formed. As shown, the lens or lap holder A is stationary and the lap or lens B is cemented to a holder Q mounted in a part-spherical member H co-operating with a seating J, a self-aligning ball or roller bearing RST being provided for the 'member H, which also carries a spindle K. A drum U with spherical surface having its centre at the centre X of the member H is secured to the member and is driven frictionally by a pinion V ; during grinding, the parts are rotated, the angle of inclination Z being varied as required. The holder Q may be recessed to receive the lens by the formation of two slots, which may be cut to form a cross. The lens or lap may be held on an element having a spherical inner surface movably engaging a stationary ball, or the element H may be hemispherical and fitted with a screwed spindle carrying the lens or lap whereby the radius of curvature may be adjusted.
