Abstract
603,668. Lapping part-spherical concave and convex surfaces. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and ADAMS, A. E. Oct. 26, 1945, No. 28421. [Class 60] Apparatus for lapping part-spherical concave and convex surfaces, as e.g. optical lenses and mirrors or parts of mechanism such as ballraces, comprises two co-operating parts constituted by the lapping tool and a holder for the work-piece, a driving shaft, means on said shaft for causing one of said parts to execute both a rotation relative to said shaft about an axis other than the axis of said shaft and a gyration about the axis of said shaft, a strut rigid with the other of said parts and cooperating with a thrust bearing which provides a limited universal motion, means for applying an adjustable load to said thrust bearing, and means for preventing continuous rotation of said other part. A frame 10 is fixed on or incorporates a bench 1, in which is journalled a driving shaft 2, driven by belt and pulley 3. The upper end of the shaft carries a jaw 4 in which is a bearing housing 5 for a work spindle 6, the housing being angularly adjustable about a horizontal axis intersecting the axes of the driving shaft and spindle, screws 7 being provided to lock the housing in the jaw at any desired inclination of the spindle axis to the vertical. The spindle 6 has a planet frictionwheel 8, one edge of the periphery of which runs on a rubber-faced annular friction gear ring 9 coaxial with the driving shaft and vertically adjustable. The upper end of the spindle 6 has a mounting 13 of known type for a lens or a block of lenses under treatment. A cylindrical housing 14 in the upper part of the frame contains a plunger 15 downwardly urged by a compression spring 16 abutting a screw plug 17 ; the lower end of the plunger has a spherical cup engaging a ball 18 engaging a spherical cup in the upper end of a strut 19 rigid with the part-spherical lapping tool 20 ; an arm 21 extending laterally from the strut slidably engages a part of the frame to prevent the tool from rotating continuously. The lap and work may be interchanged.
