Abstract

<PICT:0584744/III/1> In an apparatus for cleaning or pickling small articles by spraying liquid therein a rotatably mounted barrel, inclined to the horizontal, having a rigidly attached internal helix, has a spray pipe rotatably mounted with respect to it fitted internally and a lower inlet to receive, and an upper outlet to discharge, the articles, passages being provided adjacent the surface of the barrel to permit liquid to flow down to a liquid discharge outlet. As shown, a helix is rigidly attached to the inner surface of a barrel 1 and moves small articles from the inlet chute 29 to the discharge chute 35. Two coaxial spray pipes 15 and 16 are rotatably mounted with respect to the barrel so that they may remain stationary while the barrel rotates and meet at a dividing flange 17, the lower pipe 15 being supplied from a pump 23, with a pickling liquid which is sprayed from holes 18 and the upper pipe 16 being supplied with wash water. The pickling liquid runs down the barrel through the spaces in the helix to discharge 21 and the wash liquid in similar manner is discharged at an outlet 22. The pickled and washed articles are dried after discharge on a jigging screen 36 by hot vapour supplied from a fan 37 and heater 39. The faces of the helix facing upwardly may be protected by a resilient lining.
