Abstract

<PICT:0464063/III/1> <PICT:0464063/III/2> In an apparatus for degreasing metal articles, of the kind described in Specification 430,704 and consisting of a casing closed to exclude air and retain solvent vapour and having entry and exit stacks, there is provided intermediate the inlet and outlet a receptacle for liquid solvent forming a seal against through-draughts whilst permitting passage of the articles there-through. The solvent is replenished by a condenser over the receptacle which is provided with an overflow limiting its depth. A suitable apparatus consists of a casing provided with inclined entry and exit stacks 21, 22, a spraying chamber 30 in which boiling solvent passes to spray pipes 81, and a liquid solvent bath 39 having a vertical baffle 51 which dips into the solvent forming a liquid seal. An air vent pipe 52 is provided. Solvent vapours generated in the chamber 30 fill the apparatus and are condensed to a shower by two banks of cooling coils 48, 49 and water jackets 46, 47. The bath 39 is connected through an overflow pipe 53 to the sump of the chamber 30, and also through a pipe 114 to a tank 116 which contains the solvent when the chambers are cleaned out. The spray chamber 30 is provided with a detachable sump 32 containing heating tubes and a perforated solvent-vapour diffusing plate. A layer of limestone or marble 120 is used when chlorinated solvents are employed. In operation, articles to be cleaned are carried in perforated metal baskets 59 attached to a conveyer, through the entry stack to the spraying zone 30, and then through the liquid solvent bath 39 to the exit stack through a heating zone 42 provided with an oven 44. The entry stack contains cooling tubes 50 to prevent loss of solvent vapour. In another form, the apparatus consists of a hot spray chamber 32, Fig. 10, liquid solvent receptacle 140, cold spray chamber 132 and drying zone 142. Cooling jackets 50, 146, 147 and 149 are provided. Trichlorethylene or carbon tetrachloride is specified as solvent.
