Abstract
<PICT:0474086/III/1> <PICT:0474086/III/2> Apparatus for drying or otherwise treating substances comprises a chamber 10 into which the substance is sprayed by a pipe 47, and which is provided with a number of nozzles 64 extending along the length of the chamber, and through which fluid is injected to maintain a fluid wall or screen within the chamber to prevent the substance from contacting with the chamber wall. The nozzles may be directed along chords of the cylinder 10 to impart a whirling motion to the fluid. The drying gas may be introduced by a pipe 56, 57 with a converging outlet surrounding the spray head 47. The substance is sprayed radially by an adjustable valve plate 51, and the dried material is ejected through openings 60 at the bottom of the chamber into an outlet manifold 13. The movement of the material through the openings 60 may be assisted by gas supplied by nozzles carried by a rotating sweeper 66.
