Abstract

584,510. Driving-mechanism. SAGAR, W. L. June 21, 1945, No. 11830/44. [Class 136 (ii)] In a drive for chain-driven pedal bicycles comprising a step-up gearing at the driving end of the chain and at the driven end a largediameter sprocket 15 of at least twice the size of the driving sprocket 9, the gearing is housed in a two-part casing of which the part 10 is built into the frame and the other part 11 is a removable cover, anti-friction bearings being provided in the casing for the gear shafts. In the construction shown, a step-up gear between the pedal . crank and the driving sprocket comprises a gear 4 rigid on the pedal spindle 1 and connected through gears 5, 7 on a lay shaft 6 with a pinion 8 free on the shaft 1 and rigid with the driving sprocket 9 which is connected by a roller chain 16 with the large diameter sprocket 15 mounted on the rear wheel. The rear wheel may have a braking surface near its rim to be engaged by brake blocks carried on the rear frame.
