Abstract

583,822. Carbonization of coal. GIBBONS BROS., Ltd., and JONES, G. CELLAN-. June 14, 1945, No. 11526/44. [Class 55 (i)] In the carbonization of coal in a coke oven or like retort, "end gas," i.e. coal-gas stripped of its by-products, is introduced in controlled quantities at such a point in relation to the gas outlet that it does not pass through the fuel in the retort, but makes contact therewith. As shown the "end gas" is led from a source by a pipe d to a pipe e fitted with a valve f and connected to a tuyere g leading into the carbonising chamber a of the retort which has charging holes b, b, b, b formed in the crown h and a gas outlet c remote from the "end gas" inlet. The tuyere may be disposed in the end door of the retort or two series of tuyeres may be provided on each side of the door to allow the "end gas" to circulate along the passage between the wall and the charge. By using a series of tuyeres at different levels the height of entry of the "end gas" may be controlled. The "end gas" may be blended with other gases before introducing this mixture into the retort.
