[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] In apparatus comprising a coking chamber 1 and a cooling chamber 2 for the re ception of the coke from a previous charge the fuel is carbonize( by the passage there through of a mixture o the products of combus tion of a considerable part of the distillation gases and the remain der of the distillation gases, the gases with drawn from the coking chamber by a fan 7 be ing delivered, after cooling, by a pipe 6 to the coke chamber 2 whence they return, by conduit 9, to the coking chamber for further combustion and recirculation through the system. Combustion is effected in a chamber 1a at the upper end of the chamber 1 by air supplied at 14, while the circulation system is provided with valved outlets 15 through which any surplus gas may be taken off. Valves 11, 12, 13 enable the coke chamber 2 to be cut out of the circuit when carbonizing the first charge or when the cooling operation is completed before the charge in the chamber 1 is fully carbonized. A modification is described in which the circulating gases pass upwardly through both the coke chamber 2 and the carbonizing chamber 1. The gases employed for the carbonizing of a charge in the chamber 1 need not be the gases produced in that chamber, but may be constituted, wholly or in part, by gases from another similar chamber. A single coke-cooling chamber may serve a number of coking chambers the charges from which may be cooled either simultaneously or in succession.
