Abstract
600,266. Retorts for destructive distillation. SOC. ANON. LOUVROIL-MONTBARD-ALTLNOYE. March 10, 1945, No. 6177. Convention date, April 28, 1942. [Class 55(i)] In retorts for distilling solid fuels such as coals and schists charged at the top of a shaft 1 and discharged at the bottom, means are provided for controlling the operation of an extractor 12 for the vapours evolved to equalize pressures on both sides of a closure 3 at the charging end and ensure atmospheric pressure in the retort, and also for regulating the pressure in a chamber beyond a closure 10 at the discharging end so as to equal that in the retort at that end. For controlling the effect of pump 12 a valve 11 is operated by means of a governor 13 in dependence on the pressure in the upper part of the retort. For regulating pressure in the chamber beyond the retort a small amount of steam may be injected sufficient to pass through the closure into the retort, or a fan may be operated in dependence on the pressure difference between the lower retort zone and the chamber. Or a hearth chamber 21 in which the discharged fuel is burnt has an air inlet 22 operated in dependence on the pressure difference between retort and hearth. In another modification steam to be supplied to the lower part of the retort is heated by contact with the discharged schist before introduction at a pressure equal to that of the retort gases.
