Abstract

580,982. Stabilizing ships. BELL, J., and WRIGHT, C. S. April 28, 1944, No. 8052. [Class 113 (ii)] A number of small fins or stabilisers F mounted on separate shafts S arranged at right angles to the longitudinal centre line of the ship, are located in openings MN, OP, QR along the length of the bilge keel B each side of the ship and with the oscillation of shaft by control from inside the ship the fin is tilted to impel water through the openings to produce a stabilising force. The width through the bilge keel may be locally increased to receive the fins and may have a guard rail to protect the fins from fouling by external objects.
