Abstract

579,598. Two-stroke scavenging. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. April 6, 1945, No. 8597. Convention date, April 18, 1944. [Class 7 (ii)] A two-stroke internal-combustion engine, Fig. 1, has piston controlled inlet ports 4, 5, 6 and 7 and exhaust ports 12 two at least of inlet ports 4 and 5 being directed perpendicularly towards the centre plane 8 and bounded by the walls 13 and 14, which are tangential to the cylinder, making sharp turns to form the faces 15 and 16 either side of the centre plane, the angle of the ports with relation to the cylinder axis decreasing as it approaches the sharp bends, shown by the arrows 20 and 21 on Figs. 5 and 6. The two adjacent ports 6 and 7 have the sharp bend faces 24 and 25 respectively which may be either directed to the cylinder axis or to a point two thirds the radius of the cylinder towards the ports 4 and 5. In a modification for a unifiow cylinder Fig. 7, the tangential walls 50, 52 have sharp bend faces 54 and 56 respectively, and further sharp bend faces 55, 57 for the second series of ports. Figs. 9 and 10 show by arrows 76 and 75 the angles of the ports to the cylinder axis. The sharp bend faces may be contained wholly in the cylinder liner 11 and the radial depth of the ports before the sharp turn must be less than two thirds of that measured close to the opposite axial confining edge of said ports.
