Abstract
261,435. Ricardo, H. R. May 21, 1925. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-The combustion chamber D is substantially of circular crosssection in a plane at right angles to the axis of the engine cylinder, and communicates with the cylinder by means of an opening of smaller bore than the cylinder. One or more liquid fuel admission devices F are arranged to inject in a direction parallel to and at a substantial distance from the axis of the cylinder or, if inclined, so as to have a substantial component in that direction. Air is admitted through ports A<2>, C<5> in the cylinder A and sleeve valve C so arranged as to impart a gyratory motion which may be further promoted by projections from the top of the piston or from the head of the combustion chamber. When poppet valves are employed the inlet valve is formed with a semi-cylindrical shield P<s>, Fig. 6, for diverting the air towards the periphery of the chamber.
