Abstract

504,486. Oil engines. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Jan. 27, 1938, No. 2638. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (iii)] In a spark-ignited engine in which a light fuel, e.g. petrol, is directly injected into the combustion chamber, a large overlap between inlet and exhaust periods is provided and the fuel injection is delayed until the closure of the exhaust ports. In a four-stroke engine the angular overlap is at least 20‹ and is preferably between 40 and 90‹, and in a two-stroke engine it is between 110 and 140‹. The large overlap enables the outflowing exhaust gases to assist in inducing the cylinder charge whether a pump is used or not.
