579,541. Knives with sliding blades. PALMER, D. A. May 24, 1944, No. 10000. [Class 146 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A knife comprises a blade or blades 12 which are slidably mounted to enter the hollow portions of the handle 10, and spring controlled catches or shutters 25. The shutters are formed by a right-angle bend at the end of a leaf spring 22 which retains the blade inside the handle or locks the blade in the open position by coacting with a recess 20 formed in the tang 19, and are actuated by bifurcated levers 27 which when depressed draw back the leaf springs to allow the blade to slide in or out. A modification is described in which the blades are projected from opposite ends of the handle.
