Abstract

579,520. Protective cut-out systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ABBOTT, A. May 12, 1944, No. 9141. [Class 38 (v)] Each end of a zone to be protected has an induction relay comprising a field magnet 3 and operating magnet 4, the latter having opposed operating windings 9 and restraining windings 10, both energized from a winding 8 inductively energized by the field coil 6. The windings 8, 10 are in series over pilot conductors 11, whereby normally each relay is restrained in proportion to the currents at both ends, whereas the operating effect is responsive only to current at the one end and is arranged to be about 20 per cent. less than the restraining effect. On internal fault, the " incoming" relay circulates more of the increase through the operating winding which overcomes the restraint and operates the relay. On through-faults, the restraining effect which is proportional to the through-current, prevents operation. Undesired operation by H.F. transients of steep wave-front is prevented by non-induction shunts 13. The windings 6, 9, 10 may alternatively be separately energized.
