[Class 45] A bale tie fastening tool has'means for straining the wire or band which do not involve locating a large part of the tool between the band and the package, and thus does not create a slackness in the band tension when the tool is removed, a sole plate 4 being provided which lies between the two ends of the wire during tensioning. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which a prong 3 extending downward and forward from the sole plate 4 engages a hole provided in the band near its end 1a. The further end of the band is wrapped around the head 13 of a shaft 8 carrying ratchet wheels 7, and is passed through a diametrical slot 12 therein. The wheels 7 are turned by a pawl 9 carried by a swingable lever 10, detents 11 holding the head 13 in its advanced position, while the overlapping parts 1c of the band are secured together either by a separate clamping tool or by means incorporated with the tool shown. Alternatively the tensioning may be effected by a serrated gripping wheel rotated by the wheels 7. Fig. 3 shows another form of strainer having a prong 3 as above, but tensioning by means of a gripper 18 advanced along a rack 14 by a pinion 20 intermittently rotated by a rocking hand lever 10.' A pawl 21 which transmits this motion can be disconnected by thumb pressure on a handle 23 or by swinging the lever 10 forward till an abutment 25 contacts a cam 22. This extended swing also contacts a leg 24 which raises the gripper 19 off the band for release of the tool after fastening the ends 1c together. The band may have a series of holes for the prong 3 along the whole of its length, and in the case of wire there may be formed loops at intervals to receive the prong.
