Abstract

579,471. Valves. JONES, C. O. I., and CROWTHER, J. April 19, 1944, No. 7215. [Class 135] An iris diaphragm type of valve comprises a series of angularly spaced plates 14 of the form shown in Fig. 4, each having a rib 17 which engages in one of a series of tangential slots 19 in one body portion 13 of the valve and each having a tongue portion 16 which engages in a groove 15 of the adjacent plate. Each plate also has a pin 18 which is engaged by one of the slots 20 in a ring member 21 housed in the other part 11 of the valve body and actuated by a crank lever 24 and a pin-and-slot connection to a lug 22 on the ring. Simultaneous movement of the plates is effected by a rotary movement of the ring 21 to vary the size of the orifice from a clear passageway as in Fig..2 to a completely closed passageway as in Fig. 5. Other forms of actuating mechanism comprise the worm and gear mechanism 31, 32, 33, Fig. 8, or a screw-and-nut mechanism operating on a slotted lug on the ring 21.
