Abstract

575,066. Ventilating submarines. SHEFFIELD, W. F. Oct. 30, 1943, No. 17966. [Class 137] [Also in Group XXVII] Fresh air is supplied under slight pressure to submarines from a cylinder 11 through ducting 6 and register outlets 7. Pumps 14 exhaust vitiated air through registers 13 in ducting 31 preferably arranged at the upper part of the vessel and leading to a reservoir 15 whence the air is forced by a pump 16 through a check valve 35 into a casing 34 terminating in outlets projecting through the hull. Gases exhausting from internal combustion engines 4 through a muffler 41 and reservoir 24 are also directed by pump 16 into the casing from which a rotating helix driven from a motor 37 expels them intimately mixed with water. In a modification an exhaust pump mounted directly on the main propeller shaft expels vitiated air and exhaust gases from a common reservoir into the passage formed by the turns of the helix which is also mounted on the shaft.
