Abstract

1316455 Charging engines, exhaust passages OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 21 Sept 1970 [9 April 1970] 44801/70 Heading F1B In an I. C. engine, having first and second cylinders 84, 86, Fig. 4 operating so that when an exhaust port in one of the cylinders is open during a power stroke the exhaust port is closed in the other cylinder during a compression stroke, the exhaust ports 88, 90 communicate with an exhaust receiver 154, 156 arranged so that a compressive pulse can pass from the exhaust port open during the power stroke to be reflected back from the closed exhaust port of the other cylinder to the first cylinder before the first exhaust port is closed on the compression stroke. The exhaust receiver is formed as a U- shape by passages 154, 156 and concave surface 158. A slot 160 allows the exhaust gases to pass through a passage 168 communicating with a hollow hub 170 for underwater discharge. A passage 153, Fig. 5 between the passage 154, 156 communicates at its open upper end with an engine cooling water passage 141 and communicates through drainage apertures 155 with the drive shaft housing 157. A wall of cooling water is maintained in passage 157A the cooling water passing through aperture 165, Fig. 9 in gear case 94 for discharge via slots 171. During idling exhaust gas passes through apertures 151 and percolates through the water in housing 157 and thence passes through aperture 152A into receptacle 153A and discharge outlet 154A.
