Abstract

[Class 46] [Also in Group XXXIV] In an arrangement for filtering lubricating oil or other liquids in which the liquid is circulated so that part of it is by-passed and filtered, the flow through the filter is controlled by a valve which is automatically adjusted by temperature-responsive or pressure-responsive means subject to the temperature or pressure of the liquid, whereby the rate of flow through the filter is reduced on rise of temperature or reduction of pressure of the liquid. As shown in Fig. 2, a chamber 2 near the outlet from an oil filter contains a bi-metallic strip 7 carrying a needle valve 9. The valve is positioned near to a restricted passage 4. With the oil at a low temperature the passage 4 is fully open permitting the oil to flow readily, but as the temperature increases the valve 9 moves towards the passage 4 so: that the flow of oil becomes more and more restricted. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, a chamber 10, with an inlet 11 adapted to be connected to-an oil filter, is provided with a capsule 13 carrying a needle valve 14. The valve projects into a vertical passage, 12. The capsule may be filled with gas or liquid and in addition or alternatively may have a spring 15. In the case of the capsule being filled with gas the position of the valve is determined by the pressure inside and outside the capsule. Instead of a capsule a piston inside a cylinder may be employed, the piston controlling the needle valve.
