Abstract

656,494. Filters. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Sept. 20, 1948, No. 24598. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1947. [Class 46] An oil filter having an inlet and outlet located at its base has check valves in the inlet and outlet spring-biassed to permit oil flow in the normal direction so that the filter is maintained full when the engine lubricated by the oil has stopped running, and a byepass valve between the upstream side of the upstream check-valve and the downstream side of the downstream checkvalve to permit the flow of oil directly from inlet to outlet when the filter is clogged. A small orifice communicating with the inlet side of the filter may be provided to permit a continuous flow of oil over, but not through, the filtering element to the crankcase. During normal flow oil enters at 26, Fig. 4, past a ball valve 28, and into a space 29, whence it passes through a cylindrical filtering element 18, Fig. 1, into a space 30, past a ball valve 31, and out at 27. For a particular inlet oil pressure and a particular thrust of a compression spring 36, a byepass valve 34 controlled by the spring is forced to the left, as shown in Fig. 6, when the pressure in the outlet space 30 drops to a critical value due to total clogging of the element 18. Oil then flows past the valve 34 to the outlet 27. The springs controlling valves 28 and 31 are chosen so that these valves close at the same time, the filter chamber thus remaining permanently full. When the inlet oil pressure is very low during idling of the engine, the spring 36 forces the byepass valve 34 to the fully-open position. Valves 28 and 31 close at the same time. When the filter element 18 is only partially clogged, the valve 34 is just closed. A slot 20, Fig. 1, is provided in a screw 14 which engages with a supporting tube 13, the top of the tube being closed by a disc 22 having an orifice 23, and the bottom opening into a conduit 24 leading to the crankcase. Unfiltered oil may thus rise from the inlet space 29, pass over the element 18, and through slot 20 and orifice 21 back to the crankcase to rapidly warm up the filtering element after a cold start.
