Abstract

913,414. Filters. PALL CORPORATION. July, 18 1960, No. 25047/60. Class 46. A filter for hydraulic fluid comprises a head 50, inlet and outlet passages 51, 52 communicating with concentric chambers 53, 54, a valve sleeve 59 reciprocably mounted on an outlet valve seat 56 dependent from a wall 55 between the chambers, the sleeve 59 being biased by a spring 61 towards the closed position, a bowl 90 removably attached to the head and containing a filter element 67, e.g. wire mesh or porous sintered stainless steel, and a sealing member 65 on the bowl which engages the sleeve 59 and maintains it off the seat 56, and off an inlet valve seat having a sealing element or elements 73, when the bowl is attached to the head. When the bowl is unscrewed from the head, the valve sleeve 59 engages both seats closing off the chambers 54 and 53 before the bowl is removed from the head, thereby preventing fluid leakage. During assembly the top of the previously filled bowl extends above the lower portion of the valve sleeve 59, immersing it in hydraulic fluid and excluding air before it is opened. A pressure differential indicator 82 of e.g. magnetic type is installed between the two chambers and a by-pass valve 81 opens if the pressure differential becomes excessive.
