Abstract

574,073. Moulding brake linings, clutch facings, &c., in ring-and-roller machines. SNOW, H. Dec. 29, 1943, No. 21817. Convention date, Nov.' 21, 1942. [Class 87 (ii)] In order to vary the depth of the compression channel 41, the roller 23 is vertically adjustable on the hub 16 on which rotates the ring 27. The roller is rotatably mounted on an axle 22 located in one of six bores 21 in the hub, the six bores being at different distances from the centre of the hub. To vary the position of the roller from that shown, the roller and ring are removed from the hub, and the axle 22 is removed from its bore 21 and placed in another bore. The hub is then detached from the frame 10 by removing six bolts 19, and rotated to bring the axle 22 vertically below the hub centre. The bolts 19, roller 23 and ring 27 are then replaced. In a modification, the axle 22 may be on either side of the hub centre. To vary the width of the compression channel, the Range 52 forming the outer wall thereof'is formed of a separate ring laterally adjustable by means of bolts 53 and staggered holes 54; when the width is thus adjusted, a fresh roller 23 of corresponding thickness is fitted on the machine. The ring carries a gear 31 and is driven by an electric motor 38. The roller is driven by frictional contact with the material being moulded. The material is fed into the compression channel by a vibrating hopper 43. The moulded product is stripped from the ring by a resilient blade 44 and passes out through a shoot 47. Wire mesh or other fabric backing may be fed into the machine with the (asbestos plus organic binder) material, to be incorporated with the latter.
